Matthias Sandhofer, MD, received the Eduard Grosse Prize 2024
At the 25th Annual Conference of the Austrian Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and Aesthetic Medicine, this year’s Eduard Grosse Prize was awarded to Dr. Matthias Sandhofer. The event took place at the Hotel Imperial in Vienna from 17 to 19 October.
I have known Dr. Sandhofer for more than 20 years. We really got to know each other at the World Academy of Cosmetic Surgery congress in Vienna in 2012, which I helped to organise. Since then, Dr Sandhofer has published various articles on the topics of cryolipolysis, cellulite and lipoedema in the journal Kosmetische Medizin. A particular highlight was our collaboration on the publication of ‘Anatomy of the Face’ by Friedrich Anderhuber and Ulrike Pilsl.
His passion is human fat, diseases such as venous disorders and, in particular, lipoedema. He is considered a pioneer of outpatient liposuction, which he has been performing since 1986, and of tumescent local anaesthesia. With more than 5,000 operations, he is a leader in this field and has helped many patients to return to a normal life.
The conferences of the Austrian Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and Aesthetic Medicine, which he organised, as well as the 2022 Lipedema Conference in Vienna, will always remain in my memory. With his charisma, he manages to bring together scientists and doctors from all over the world to discuss and transfer knowledge at a high scientific level.
The Eduard Grosse Prize 2025 will be awarded next year at DERM Alpin in Salzburg.
